The University of Virginia

l   Eligibility
Current students from the University of Virginia.

From 2022, there are no Chinese proficiency requirements for Huayu BEST scholarship applicants. All candidates are encouraged to apply for the scholarship if they are interested in studying Mandarin in Taiwan.

l   Obligations

Applicants should:

1. Take at least 15 hours of Chinese language courses offered by NCCU’s Chinese Language Center (CLC) per week. Course fees should be paid by the recipient.

2. Participate in language and cultural exchange activities: During the period for which the scholarship is awarded, applicants must devote at least 10 hours assisting local teachers in teaching English in elementary and secondary schools.

3. Take a Mandarin proficiency test (TOCFL-Speedy Screening exam) to determine the level of language proficiency before arriving in Taiwan. After completing the Chinese courses in Taiwan, students should take another Mandarin proficiency test (TOCFL exam) to check if their Mandarin has improved from their studies.

l   Scholarship

1.   Scholarship recipients will receive NT$25,000 per month.

2.   The amount of scholarship a student receives is based upon his or her length of study in Taiwan.

²  Regular-term scholarship:
Applicants will undertake 3 months of Chinese courses at NCCU’s Chinese Language Center and will receive a stipend of NT$25,000 per month for 3 months.

²  Long-term scholarship:
Applicants will undertake 6 or 9 months of Chinese courses at NCCU’s Chinese Language Center and will receive a stipend of NT$25,000 per month for 6 or 9 months.

l  Application documents

1.     Proof of taking the TOCFL-Speedy Screening exam. (To take the exam, please send an email to: nccu.huayubest@gmail.com. You will receive a personal account and a set of passwords for the exam within 24 hours you sent the email.)

l  Study Period
March 4, 2024 - August 23, 2024

Please note that students are obligated to take at least 15 hours of Chinese class at NCCU’s Chinese Language Center (CLC) during the scholarship-awarded period. Therefore, if you are not taking Chinese courses, we will not be able to provide you with the Huayu BEST scholarship. Please check the course schedule of NCCU CLC (https://mandarin.nccu.edu.tw/course1.php?1) before applying for the scholarship.

University of Leeds

l  Eligibility
Current students from the University of Leeds.

l  Obligations
Applicants should:

1.  Take at least 15 hours of Chinese language courses offered by NCCU’s Chinese Language Center (CLC) per week. Course fees should be paid by the recipient.

2. Spend 10 hours in total helping local teachers as they teach English in local elementary schools during the scholarship-awarded period.

3.  Take a Mandarin proficiency test (TOCFL-Speedy Screening exam) to determine their level of language proficiency before arriving in Taiwan. After completing the Chinese courses in Taiwan, students should take another Mandarin proficiency test (TOCFL exam) to check if their Mandarin has improved from their studies. Students can choose to take the post-study exam in Taiwan or after they return home.

4. Scholarship recipients must pass a low intermediate-level Chinese language proficiency exam within 1 year after they complete their Chinese study at NCCU.
