“Dōngzhì (Winter solstice)” is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and other East Asians during the Dongzhi solar term (winter solstice). In Taiwan, we also nickname it Tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) Festival. Dongzhi represents a time spent with family with people gathering together at home and eating tangyuan, because the round shape of the rice balls also symbolize family reunion, harmony, unity and prosperity. With the given meaning, we always eat Tangyuan and worship the gods and our ancestor on this day. Also, we will worship with it and eat it when holding a wedding or housewarming.
It is observed with a family reunion over the long night, when pink and white tangyuan are eaten in sweet broth. But, do you know why we eat pink and white tangyuan? In tradition, the red is the color of prosperity and fortunate, and the white stands for wealth or age.
Eating tang yuan also represents becoming a year older. In Taiwan, there is a tang yuan joke- we won’t get 1 year old if we don’t eat tangyuan.
There are many different types of tang yuan with the popular fillings being peanut, black sesame or red bean paste. The traditional serving is unfilled rice balls in a sweet soup, such as ginger and rock sugar, but there's also red bean and black sesame soup.
The Dōngzhì of this year lies on December 21. Why don’t you have tang yuan with us to get 1 year old. ^^
